Guess who has air tickets to America for October/November?
(Also 2 knitting magazines, some Lush soap, some cold/flu tablets in case of emergency, and a pile of grocery shopping, but then you know what the Saturday afternoon shopping run is like.)
Trying to update my fanfiction pages. Embarrassed to find that I apparently haven't done so since February or so. Oops.
The rain held off today and it was merely cloudy and cool. I can live with that.

"Hoy, Mister Mate -- what of the tug?"
"None to be had!" cried the breathless mate, scorning the plank and swinging himself aboard by the new mainstays. "There was three fired up -- but two spiked overnight, a'purpose! A mercy their boilers didn't blow to blazes! And the last the Wolves took, with pistol's point as fee! We'll needs wait hours!"
Pierce threw down his hat and stamped upon it. "By Beelzebub's burning balls! And miss the dawn? Never! Hands to the braces! We'll after them under stail alone! We caught the bastards before and by hell's thunders we'll do it again, if it's up Satan's arsegut they flee us! Topmen aloft! Leap to it, rum-rotted whoreson bitch-spawn you be --"
The mate's leathery face rumpled uneasily. "But cap'n -- how'll we know their course to follow? We've no way --"
"Ah, but we have!" said Mall grimly. "The Stryge may check it if he wills, but I doubt his divination will fare better. A contention's in hand among the Invisibles, t'would seem. So where else would the Chorazin be bound in such case, but to the island that's their home?"

No ma'am, salad doesn't just automatically come to the table. Yes, I have to be able to ring in your entree before I can ring in your salad. I don't care if you're pregnant; being pregnant doesn't mean you can have a hissy fit that your salad wasn't with your drinks. Plus, I can't carry all that crap on one tray. Oh, you got the GM to bring your salad, awesome. You still want a soup? It's extra. Yes. Yes it is. Because it's soup OR salad with your entree. I'm telling you this so you don't freak out when I bring your check and there's an extra charge, okay? I'm trying to be on your side.
What do you mean you didn't get your salad? GM brought it out. Well, if you wanted more then ASK FOR A FREE REFILL. Don't get snippy for "not getting a salad" when I just picked up the empty bowl. :/
I don't care if the OG in Florida brings salad with drinks. This is Georgia. This is different. I don't know why it's not automatic, I'm not the district manager. No, seriously I DON'T KNOW. I've never heard of a salad coming to the table with drinks. NEVER. The last time I was ever at an OG to eat? TWELVE YEARS AGO. D: I didn't even know it came in a big bowl 'till I started working here. YES THE BREAD IS COMING. I haven't even stepped foot in the kitchen. You've been sitting for, oh, 3 minutes and so many seconds. I'm sorry, I'm not Superman with the super speed. I'm just a derp with bum knees. |

| Babies do strange things to the head |
[Jul. 18th, 2009|06:26 pm] |
| [ | Current Mood |
| | stressed | ] | So today, my best friend and I as well as our roommate (who is also a friend!) went to see The Proposal. We all though it was immensely funny but on the ride home, our conversation turned towards babies, because friend saw a hospital and commented that their maternity ward was one of the best she'd ever seen and that she'd like to have her baby there when she gets married/pregnant. I jokingly commented that because it was a Catholic hospital, she'd better hope that there were no complications, because they wouldn't let her pick in a mother or baby situation (I don't even know if that's true or not -- we were all kidding around).
She then turned around and said that was no problem, that she'd be more than happy to die if it meant that her baby could live.
I kind of laughed and said "Oh, well, there's only one of you, you know, but you could always try for another baby."
She said she didn't care, she'd rather die.
I just shut up because I didn't want to argue in my roommate's car.
But what I wanted to say was that if that happened, I would hate her child forever for taking my best friend away from me.
I feel like such a terrible person for thinking something like that, but this is one of the reasons I'm terrified of pregnancy. Her mom nearly died giving birth to her and she was okay with that too. I just wanted to say "How could you love a little blob of cells that doesn't have a personality yet more than your husband, your friends, the rest of your family, any potential other children you could already have" ...? I would never want to get pregnant, (obviously for many, many more reasons, but in this particular circumstance) because I know that I would pick myself, and that everyone would call me a monster for it. |

| This Sunday & Next: Agatha Christie/Miss Marple - PBS Masterpiece Mystery! (US/Canada?) |
[Jul. 18th, 2009|07:20 pm] |
PBS Masterpiece Mystery! has been airing several of Agatha Christie's Miss Marple novel adaptations, starring Julia McKenzie (from Cranford) as Miss Marple, since the beginning of July. The third one, They Do It with Mirrors, starring Joan Collins, will be airing *this* Sunday evening, July 18th (TOMORROW), in most parts of the US (and in some areas of Canada?). (check local listings) Some the other cast members...Maxine Peake (Little Dorrit), Sarah Smart (Casualty 1909), and Elliot Cowan (Lost in Austen) may be familiar to you as well.
The fourth and final adaptation, Why Didn't They Ask Evans?, will air on Sunday, July 26th. ( some people you may know )
**Also, you can still watch the previous two adaptations online @ PBS (I believe this is available for US viewers only)**
Episode 1: A Pocket Full of Rye (online viewing until this Sunday, July 19, 2009 - TOMORROW) Episode 2: Murder is Easy (until Sunday, July 26, 2009)
( online viewing dates for eps 3 & 4 )
The promotional graphics for the other episodes are behind the cut... I'm sure all of these eps are chock full of other costume drama alumni whose names I don't recognize, as well.
( YOU MAKE THE CALL: Matthew Macfadyen's mustache...real or fake? )
(cross-posted in a somewhat similar form - w/o costume drama commentary - to lost_inausten & uktvmystery ) |

Title: Limbo Author: polskipiwo Rating: PG-13 Genre: Nolanverse, gen Characters: Bruce, Alfred, Joker, and other minor appearances Disclaimer: Characters are not my creation. Summary: The state of Bruce, Batman and Gotham one year after the events of The Dark Knight. I'm posting this as a tribute to the one-year anniversary of TDK. I am so happy to have been a part of this fandom since it took off last summer. I have met many wonderful, helpful people who have fueled my creative efforts, whether or not they were good. Compared to other fandoms I've encountered, this one is by far the most fun. Thank you for your support, and I look forward to participating in this fandom until someone drags me away.
Also, I've never written anything from Bruce's POV before. Scary!

| Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief |
[Jul. 18th, 2009|07:21 pm] |
Book #25 The Lightning Thief Rick Riordan YA fiction; fantasy; series 377 pages

At the outset of this fast-paced tale by Rick Riordan, it would seem that Percy Jackson is just another New York kid diagnosed with ADHD, who has good intentions, a nasty stepfather, and a long line of schools that have rejected him. The revelation of his status as half-blood offspring of one of the Greek gods is nicely packaged, and it's easy to believe that Mount Olympus, in modern times, has migrated to the 600th floor of the Empire State Building (the center of Western civilization) while the door to Hades can be found at DOA Recording Studio, somewhere in LA. With his new friends, a disguised satyr, and the half-blood daughter of Athena, Percy sets out across the country to rectify a feud between Zeus, Hades, and Poseidon. Along the way they must cope with the Furies, Medusa, motorcycle thug Aires, and various other immortals. Although some of Jesse Bernstein's accents fail (the monster from Georgia, for instance, has no Southern trace in her voice), he does a fine job of keeping the main characters' tones and accents distinguishable. He convincingly portrays Percy, voicing just the right amount of prepubescent confusion, ironic wit, and the ebbing and waning of concern for himself and those around him. Mythology fans will love this take and kids who haven't been inculcated with the Classical canon will learn aspects of it here while having no trouble following a rollicking good–and modern–adventure.
I thought that this was a great book! Greek mythology has always fascinated me and I love to read those kinds of stories and books. This book made me realize that I do not know a lot about mythology, but I'd love to read more books about it. The characters were all intriguing and I cannot wait to learn more them and the many other adventures that they have in this series. I also cannot wait to see the movie.

| [Book 9] Detective Conan volume 12, by Goushou Aoyama |
[Jul. 18th, 2009|07:11 pm] |
Title: Detective Conan Volume: 12 (chapters 111-120) Author: Goushou Aoyama (Gōshō Aoyama) Genre: Murder Mystery Themes: Crime, murder, secret identity, secrets, Sherlock Holmes Book details: Manga, aprox. 178 pages
My Rating: 4.5/5
Summaries: Case 1: Doc Agasa takes Conan and his young Junior Detective League pals to an old, abandoned mansion for a treasure hunt. When the pint-size investigators find a mysterious box, they open it and discover it is full of smashed toys and a violently stabbed teddy bear! Conan follows the trail of clues and runs smack-dab into a dead old man in an attic! - Wikipedia Case 2: A game based on Mouri Kogorou’s cases is being made by the Mantendo Company, and he’s invited to the debut. Ran and Conan come along. When Conan hears the names “Gin and Vodka” spoken by a suspicious black-clothed person called “Tequila”, Conan must figure out a way to get more information. But what happens when his only link is killed? Case 3: Conan wins in a contest for a Sherlock Holmes tour. When he arrives, he runs into his old ‘rival’ – Hattori Heiji. What are two detectives without a case?
My Review: Case 1: Very interesting case, I liked it a lot, though I wish there had been more to it so we could see… Case 2: Good. More Black Organization. Case 3: Heiji, yay! Even though I feel really familiar with this case, it’s still enjoyable (mostly for the Heiji + Conan interaction). |

| | mischievous | ] | Ok, I work part time in a large clothing store in the UK *degrees ain't cheap* and the staff there are all very lovely but not really people who I would particularly call friends. Well anyway, I was helping clean up the children's section with a few other girls. They started to coo over all the 'sweeeeet' baby clothing (seriously, why is that cute?) and were chatting happily abou their future kids. Which I really didn't mind, but not really my cup of tea, so I carried on working. Then they all tried to get me involved, asking about how many kids I want which I thought was a bit weird. Seeing the look on my face, a kind of 'WTF???' one girl piped up 'oh she doesn't want kids at ALL'. Uh oh! They all crowded around going 'ohhh WHY???????'. I answered with a simple 'I don't like children'. Which is true.
Haha, big mistake. 'OMG why don't you like the BAYBEESSSS?' 'You were a baby once!' 'Thats just going against your nature' (excuse me, I don't have a baby-making nature thank you, whatever that means).
The same girl turned to me and said 'well what are you going to do when you get pregnant? Then you are going to HAVE to raise it!' to which I replied 'well, I would get an abortion'. You would not believe the outcry. Abortion is very evil, didn't I know? 'So are you seriously saying you would get an abortion??'
By this time I got bored, and replied 'yes. With a coathanger if worst comes to worse.' They all glared at me and everytime they bingoed me after that, I would simply say 'coathanger' and wave a coathanger. I am evil, I know, but I am sick of explaining myself to people and being treated like a freak of nature.
But it did make me LOL seeing their faces. I don't think I shall be getting anymore baby bullshit at me :D |
